What Is Ozone?
Ozone is a supercharged version of oxygen. The standard air we breathe is a mix of gases like nitrogen, oxygen and smaller amounts of other gasses. Two oxygen atoms join together in pairs (O2) sharing electrons and forming a stable molecule.
Ozone (O3) is a reactive gas composed of three oxygen atoms but sharing the same number of electrons that make two oxygen atoms stable. Small amounts of Ozone can stimulate the mitochondria in your cells ten times better than oxygen, to use oxygen they get more efficiently.
Wait! Ozone is an environmental pollutant, a poison. How can it be an effective medical treatment? Most people only hear the word ozone in context to pollution. Before the modern era of pollution, atmospheric ozone was limited to a layer hundreds of miles above the earth where it naturally formed due to the sun’s ultraviolet ray’s interaction with oxygen that surrounds our planet.
When modern industrial processes, combustion engines and factories released hydrocarbons into the atmosphere these molecules interacted with the oxygen, nitrogen and water vapor in the air yielding oxides and ozone. This mixture is called smog. The negative health consequences of smog have more to do with the hydrocarbon, nitrate peroxides, and Sulphur oxides in it, not the ozone.
While it is true that ozone at high concentrations can be potent respiratory toxin, there is a difference between ozone pollution and medical grade ozone used by doctors and therapists.
Medical grade ozone is made from pure oxygen at a carefully controlled low level, using a special generator designed for medical use and doesn’t contain hydrocarbons, nitrates, peroxides, sulphur oxides or other potentially toxic materials. When used according to the guidelines it can be a beneficial therapy.
To help buffer the effects of medical grade ozone therapy, ozone is filtered through organic olive oil before entering the lungs. When filtered ozone enters the body, it quickly interacts with the tissues to form peroxides. These beneficial peroxides as ozonides, provide positive health effects and are relatively stable molecules lasting days to weeks in the body, continuing to provide positive benefits long after the treatment session.
Ozone therapy has been used in European clinics and hospitals for over fifty years and in the United States to a more limited extent. There are professional medical Ozonotherapy societies in over ten countries worldwide. Recently, the International Scientific Committee on Ozonotherapy (ISCO3) was formed to help establish standardized scientific principles for Ozonotherapy. The current president of the AAO, Frank Shallenberger, MD is a founding member of ISCO3.
Ozonotherapy was introduced into the United States in the early 1980’s, and has been increasingly used and found useful in treating various diseases:
It can help activate the immune system in infectious diseases.
It can improve the cellular utilization of oxygen that reduces ischemia in cardiovascular diseases, and in many of the illnesses of aging.
It can aid in the release of growth factors that stimulate damaged joints and degenerative discs to regenerate.
It can dramatically reduce or even eliminate many cases of chronic pain through its action on pain receptors.
Published papers have documented the potential healing effects on interstitial cystitis, chronic hepatitis, herpes infections, dental infections, diabetes, and macular degeneration.
Oxygen is fundamental to our body’s proper functions, and how the body heals itself. Ozone therapy has been found to be useful for treating many conditions including: heart disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, herpes, hepatitis, interstitial cystitis, diabetes, Lyme disease, chemical sensitivity, macular degeneration, intestinal disorders, and auto-immune disorders.
Atlanta Colonic & Massage Spa offers superior medical grade ozone therapy, to help address a variety of health and wellness concerns.
