Does Our Soil Support Proper Nutrition in Crops?

Can we obtain sufficient nutrients from food alone?

Several published scientific case studies indicate adequate nutrition is often unattainable even with a balanced diet and suggest that many adults' health and wellness would benefit from added nutritional supplements.

Mineral nutrients, vitamins, and trace elements are essential for the growth and development of a multicellular organism. Today, an adequate supply of nutrients may not be attainable solely through a well-balanced diet, and a main contributor to this alarming nutritional trend is soil depletion. https://drkellymccann.com/soil-nutrient-depletion-how-is-industrial-agriculture-harming-your-health/, reports that a meta-analysis of 102 studies on changes in soil stock and nutrient depletion found that overall nutrient stores have declined by 42%. Sulfur and phosphorus content declined by approximately 27% to 33%. Globally, in the past 45-60 years, about 52% of agricultural land has been affected by soil degradation and nutrient depletion.

Plant growth is not just affected by soil minerals and nutrients but also by the fungal-bacteria content and ratio. Pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides on farmland deplete fungi's soil, allowing bacteria to grow out of control. A 1:1 ratio of bacteria and fungus optimizes soluble nutrient availability for plants. Fungus also plays an important role in breaking down minerals, allowing plants to absorb soil nutrients more readily. Humans also need both nutrients and microorganisms in our bodies to break down and utilize nutrients, and without these friendly fungi and bacteria, we can develop a nutrient deficiency.

So does this mean that not only is the soil depleted in nutrients, but biological organisms that enable the plants to uptake the nutrients in the soil are missing?

Harmful practices like excessive tillage and synthetic chemical fertilizers deplete microorganisms in the soil, so it can't regenerate the nutrients naturally, requiring more harmful synthetic chemicals that continue to degrade and deplete soil nutrients.

Biological diversity creates healthy soil and avoids nutrient depletion. Microorganisms in the soil help break down nutrients and feed plant roots. So, while there could be many nutrients in the soil, much of it may not be available for the plants to absorb.

There are ways to restore and nourish the soil to feed the plants. For example, earthworms naturally help aerate and replenish soil nutrients. Something as simple as ten earthworms per cubic foot of soil can produce over 160,000 pounds of castings annually. These castings are 5 to 10 times higher in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium than most soil aggregates.

Adding organic compost (a mixture of decomposed leaves, plants, and vegetable waste) helps soil retain moisture and can act as a fertilizer to improve the soil's overall health by feeding worms and other organisms and keeping the soil loose, increasing aeration. Hardened soil will not allow water and nutrients to reach plant roots effectively; it prevents microorganisms from moving freely and turning organic matter into nutrients.

Mulching is another valuable method of soil remediation where layers of manure or compost are applied to the soil surface, helping maintain soil moisture and moderate soil temperature during extreme hot or cold seasons. Mulching can also greatly improve soil fertility as it slowly decomposes, providing food to beneficial worms and insects underneath, keeping the natural soil cycle going. Soil can become acidic when nutrients such as calcium and magnesium dissipate.

Soil with high acidic content can become infected with a fungal disease, destroying the soil structure. Treating the soil with lime restores the pH balance and regains lost fertility.

Testing soil every few years helps determine pH levels, and pH levels that are too high or low may be toxic to plant growth. Testing can also indicate if the amount of Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Sulphur (S), and other nutrients present in the soil are correct. Experts recommend avoiding excessive tilling methods such as shoveling and raking to manage soil, which can cause the loss of nutrients and fertilizers and the ability of the soil to retain water. Use a digging fork to loosen the first few inches of the soil without gently turning the soil over so that you don't destroy the soil structure or disturb the microbial activities going on underneath.

Some plant species have roots to collect specific nutrients from the soil, known as nutrient accumulators, to increase soil fertility. Chop these nutrient-rich plants into pieces and use them as mulch all year round. Use comfrey plants and yarrow plants as organic soil fertilizers to collect and store nutrients.

Soil restoration is an ongoing process that takes time, patience, and some expertise. Many of us do not have time or access to grow our food; therefore, we are not receiving proper nutrition to fuel our bodies. The main culprit in this troubling nutritional trend is soil depletion. Modern, intensive agricultural methods have stripped large amounts of natural nutrients from the soil by lack of traditional crop rotation and overuse of synthetic fertilizers.

Atlanta Colonic & Massage Spa offers a line of highly absorbable nutritional supplements and vitamins called Biometics, which can help the body receive the usable nutrients it needs, helping to improve mental focus, energy, digestion, and much more.

Biometics uses a unique process called Bio-cellular Micellization, which re-formulates the liquid nutrients to become so small they can pass through a styrofoam cup. This increases the body's absorption to 500% to help ensure we get the maximum nutrition possible.

Bio Fuel is a liquid multi-vitamin that provides 100% of the U.S. Daily Values of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, including Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea Extract, and Ginkgo Biloba Extract. These important botanical antioxidants help the body fight cell-damaging free radicals and give you extra energy. Combine Bio-Fuel with other products in the Biometics line for a long-lasting energy charge to get you through your day.

We often take a handful of vitamins or supplements …but never really know if we are getting their full benefit.
